About The Society

The Franklin County Historical Society, situated in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, is a repository of local history and culture. It houses a genealogy library and offers tours of the Old Jail, providing insights into the region's past. The society serves as a valuable resource for researchers, history enthusiasts, and the community at large, preserving and showcasing the rich heritage of Franklin County.

We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Franklin County’s past. The Society has been collecting artifacts and information that tell the history of Franklin County since its inception in 1784. Countless volunteer and staff hours have been spent working to increase the public knowledge of our local history.

The Society is headquartered in The Old Jail - a historic building on East King Street in Chambersburg, PA. The society offers tours at The Old Jail and John Brown House Museums, as well as insures the preservation of the Brown's Mill School and Cemetery, & St. Thomas Toll House. The FCHS-K Genealogy Library contains thousands of books and documents pertaining to Franklin County families.

Franklin County Historical Society is a non-profit organization who relies on donations and grants to operate - as such, all proceeds from our products that are sold go directly into the operation of the Franklin County Historical Society.
